About One Square

One Square is a small arcade game with a single idea behind it: squares fall from the sky and you must not be hit. There is no story, no upgrades and no levels, only the falling shapes and how long you last. Games this stripped down live or die on how they feel to control, and the appeal here is that everything that kills you is clearly your own fault. You could see it coming, you had time, you moved the wrong way. That is what keeps a run from feeling unfair and keeps you starting another. One Square is a good example of a game you understand instantly and can still be bad at, which is a harder combination to design than it looks.

How to Play One Square

Move using the arrow keys, the A and D keys, or by dragging on a touchscreen. There is nothing else to press. Your only job is to keep away from the squares as they fall, and a run ends the moment one connects.

Tips and Tricks

Stay near the middle. Being pinned against an edge removes half your escape routes.
Move early and in small steps. Large panicked moves take you into space you have not checked.
Watch the top of the screen rather than the square nearest to you. By the time something is close, deciding is already too late.
When the screen gets busy, pick a gap and commit to it. Hesitating between two gaps is how most runs end.
